Supplements and functional products from formula to manufacturer

You have an idea for a powder, a capsule or a protein product and want to turn it into a market-ready product. We develop the formula, make it compliant and production-ready, and connect you with the right suppliers and a contract manufacturer. Based on more than 300 development projects.

Supplements in every dosage form

Powder, capsule, stick or liquid are often just variants of one product, but they run on different production lines. An operation that blends powder and fills it into tins does not therefore press capsules. Choosing a form determines which manufacturer is an option.

On top of that comes the legal side. Active ingredient levels, maximum amounts, recommended daily intake and the claims permitted on the pack are essential. We identify the right raw materials and develop the formula so that it is compliant and can be produced industrially.

Category knowledge

What works differently for supplements than for conventional food

Six decisions that separate a good formula from a product that can actually be produced.

The dosage form determines the manufacturer

Blending powder, filling capsules, pressing tablets and packing sticks are four different plants. Few operations can do more than two of them.

Active ingredient content is a legal figure

Everything the label states has to be present until the end of shelf life. Degradation of the ingredients over the shelf life is planned into the formula.

Health claims are exhaustively regulated

Only what is on the EU list is permitted, and usually only above a minimum amount of the nutrient. The claim you want therefore helps determine the formula.

Taste masking is the actual work

Protein, vitamins, minerals and plant extracts rarely taste good on their own. The more functional the product, the more formulation work sits in the flavour.

Bulk and filling are two steps

Many operations only blend. Filling into tins, sticks or blisters is a separate job with its own minimum quantity, sometimes even at a different site.

Solubility decides the review

Clumps in the shaker cost repeat purchases. Particle size, instantising and bulk density are extremely important formulation and process questions.

Process

Three phases to a production-ready formula

01

Fundamentals and technical concept

We sharpen the product idea, the target group and the positioning, clarify the regulatory guardrails including maximum levels and claims, and define the technical concept: dosage form, packaging, shelf life, target values.

02

Formulation and partner search

We develop the formula in the lab, test solubility, stability and sensory profile, and in parallel look for the manufacturers that can actually run your dosage form and your volume.

03

Industrial trials, iteration and handover

The formula runs on the plant, gets tasted and refined. The result is a specification a manufacturer can work with, plus nutritional values, an active ingredient table and a proposed declaration.

Benchmarks

Example figures from our projects

A few benchmarks from the projects we have supported, as rough orders of magnitude you can plan with.

Minimum quantities

Fillingfrom
Small batchfrom 300 kg
What shifts the minimum quantity
The unit changes with the dosage form
Powder operations calculate in kilograms, for example from 300 kg or 500 kg. Capsule and tablet operations calculate in units, from under 1,000 up to 15,000 to 30,000. That makes quotes hard to compare directly.
Printed packaging
One operation fills from 20,000 to 50,000 tins but requires 150,000 for printed tins. It is not the plant that sets the floor, it is the printing.
The price per unit
One operation considers almost any volume feasible at around 3 euros per unit. For high-priced products the minimum is more negotiable than for cheap ones.

Duration

6 to 12 weeks That is how long our development projects in this category take.

Manufacturer lead time

up to 16 weeks. Supplement manufacturers are in high demand at the moment and have lead times of up to 16 weeks. We find ways to be faster.

All figures are benchmarks from completed projects, not guaranteed values. We commit to quantities, dates and prices only once process, packaging and target volume are defined.

Self-check

What a manufacturer wants to see from you

If you have everything on this list, all you need is the right manufacturer. If half of it is missing, that is exactly our work.

Missing something? Let us talk
  • Compliant formula

All ingredients with quantities, active levels within legal maximums, legally checked, no open questions on claims or novel food.

  • Technical specification

Target values for bulk density, particle size, residual moisture, solubility, colour and sensory profile. What the manufacturer sets the plant to.

  • Nutritional values, active table and declaration

Calculated or analysed, with recommended daily intake, percentages of reference intake and a draft for the label.

  • Dosage form and packaging defined

Powder, capsule, tablet, stick or liquid, plus tin, pouch, blister or sachet, with a target weight per unit.

  • Realistic minimum quantity

A batch you can finance and sell, considered separately for bulk and filling. One of the most common points where projects get stuck.

Our manufacturer database

Who produces supplements in Europe and what that means for you

We maintain a database of thousands of contract manufacturers in Europe and beyond. It is our working tool for partner search, not a public directory.

150+

supplement manufacturers recorded in the database

manufacturers we are in regular contact with

40

24

countries with at least one manufacturer

The database is continuously maintained research. "In regular contact" refers to manufacturers we speak or work with on an ongoing basis. Around half of these operations also cover beverages, because drink powders and ready-to-drink products sit technically close together. Some also offer formulation work, but then develop within their own plant, suppliers and minimum quantities.

The field is smaller than for beverages and more concentrated in Germany. For individual dosage forms, especially tablets and capsules in small runs, the right operation still often sits elsewhere in Europe, frequently with different minimum quantities than comparable operations in Germany.

What our partner operations can produce

The dosage form is part of what decides which manufacturers are an option at all, and it is hard to change later.

Frequently asked

What founders ask us most often

Our development projects in this category take between 6 and 12 weeks. On top of that comes the manufacturer lead time: supplement operations are in high demand at the moment and have lead times of up to 16 weeks. We find ways to be faster.

For a small batch it starts at 300 kg. Three things mainly shift that floor: the dosage form, because powder operations calculate in kilograms and capsule or tablet operations in units; the print run of the printed packaging, which for tins is often higher than the filling volume itself; and the price per unit, because manufacturers are more flexible on high-priced products. Which figure applies to your product is something we clarify in the first conversation.

Yes. The formula is yours and you receive it in full: ingredients with quantities, technical specification, nutritional values, active ingredient table and labelling. Because we have no plant of our own, it is not tailored to one specific manufacturer either. You can approach a second operation with the same documents, compare prices or change producer later without having the product developed again. Developing at a contract manufacturer often produces a formula that only runs on their line.

Health claims are exhaustively regulated in the EU: only what is on the health claims list is permitted, and usually only above a minimum amount of the relevant nutrient. That means the claim you want to make helps determine the formula. We clarify these guardrails in the first phase, before the formula is fixed, and deliver a proposed declaration at the end.

For development this is not an academic question, it decides the manufacturer. A ready-to-drink beverage needs a filler, a powder to be mixed needs a blending operation, and around half the operations in our database cover only one of the two. If your product comes ready to drink in a bottle or can, our beverage development page is the right place.

An Innovation Sprint turns a strategic option into a validated product concept, with consumer research, trend analysis and a decision paper. Product development picks up from there and turns the validated concept into a product that can be produced. For supplements that means formula, active ingredient levels, compliance, specification and the right manufacturer.

To be clear

What we are not the right partner for

We are not a manufacturer ourselves. We do not produce in our own plants; we develop the formula and connect you with the operation that can run it. We do not develop medicines or medical devices, and we do not handle approval procedures. We do not rent out kitchens or production space. We do not take on pure filling work without a development component. We do not offer standalone HACCP consulting or certification support. If that is what you are looking for, we are happy to point you somewhere better suited.
